A limited number of teaching assistantships offer full remission of tuition plus a stipend. These are available in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and occasionally in other areas. Teaching assistantships are also offered to selected students specializing in the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in the WVU Intensive English Program. Meritorious teaching assistants are eligible on a competitive basis for a supplemental award through the Higher Education Resource Fund. Download the Application for Graduate Teaching Assistantship (PDF).
Tuition waivers are also available for qualified candidates. Students who are not GTAs may apply for meritorious tuition waivers each semester. Meritorious tuition waiver application forms are available in 205 Chitwood. These forms should be completed early in a semester to be considered for a meritorious tuition waiver for the following semester.
The Department sponsors study abroad during the summers in France, Germany, Mexico, and Spain. Qualified students in French may compete for the Marguerite Eynard McBride Award, which funds an academic year in France. Year-long exchange programs are also in place for France, Germany, and Spain. Grants are available on a competitive basis through the Department, the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, and through the Office of International Programs to assist students who wish to study abroad.
