How to Apply?

The application for the Master’s program has two parts;

An application to the university
An application to the department (including an application for a graduate teaching assistantship on side 2).

University admission requirements

Choose the appropriate language below for a translation of basic requirements:

University admission application (including an official academic record, a diploma or certificate in the original language of issue, and English translations of academic records and/or degree) and fee ($50.00)
TOEFL score for international students whose native language is not English: 550 (paper version), 213 (computer version) or 79 (internet version) for applicants in French, Linguistics, or Spanish; 580 (paper version), 237 (computer version), or 92 (internet version) for applicants in TESOL
Undergraduate degree in the desired area of study (or an acceptable related area)
Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 (overall as well as within the major)

Department admission requirements:

Department application form
300-word Statement of Purpose in which the applicant discusses his/her background in foreign languages as well as future goals
An extended academic writing sample in the language of the area to which the applicant is applying. (This should be an academic writing sample of at least 3 pages.)

Available Financial Aid

Graduate teaching assistantships are available for different languages, including Chinese, French, German, English as a Second Language, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. Students may be awarded an assistantship in an area that is different from their area of study. Graduate teaching assistants (GTA) receive tuition waivers and a monthly stipend for the semesters in which they are teaching. GTAs are required to pay for student fees, living expenses, and health insurance. Students who do not have an assistantship can apply for tuition waivers.

A recording on a CD or cassette tape in the language to which you are applying if you are a non-native speaker
Three letters of recommendation

The Graduate Teaching Assistantship application is on the second side of the department application form, which is available at Foreign Languages Department Graduate Application

For Fall admission, we begin evaluating applications on February 1 and for Spring admission on October 1. All international students are required to submit a TOEFL score, and prospective students should take care of this requirement as soon as possible.
