Catalina Méndez Vallejo is from Bogotá, Colombia. She obtained a B.A. in Language Teaching and an M.A. in Semiological Studies from Universidad Industrial de Santander, in Bucaramanga, Colombia. She has just finished a dual PhD in Linguistics and Hispanic Linguistics at Indiana University, where she also served as an Assistant Instructor. She has taught introductory linguistic courses and numerous language classes for minors and majors in Spanish. Catalina is currently a Teaching Assistant Professor at WVU, and she teaches Spanish Conversation, Spanish Phonetics, and Structure of Spanish, a linguistics course for graduate students. In terms of research, Catalina is extremely interested in syntactic variation in Colombian Spanish, and she is continuing her study of the Focalizing Ser construction. She is also interested in sociolinguistics, pragmatic variation, and the role of prosody in information structure.
